Winnetka Park District Embarks on a Comprehensive Master Plan for the Future of our Parks, Programs + Facilities

Winnetka, IL – The Winnetka Park District is excited to announce the commencement of a new comprehensive master plan project which will shape the strategic vision for the agency over the next ten years. Community feedback is at the forefront of this important initiative for the park district.

During the Regular Board Meeting on July 18, 2024, the board approved the selection of Berry, Dunn, McNeil & Parker, LLC (Berry Dunn) to lead this critical project for the Winnetka community. The plan will be developed through a robust process of discovery and engagement, which includes focus groups, pop-up events, and analysis of community needs. This collaborative approach will ensure that the final plan reflects the needs of the residents of Winnetka.

“The development of this comprehensive plan marks a significant step forward for the Winnetka Park District,” said Executive Director, Shannon Nazzal, “We are committed to listening to our community in developing a vision that not only addresses current needs but also anticipates future growth and users, as well as a varied toolkit of input activities, we look to enhance our parks, beaches, facilities, programs and experiences for all.”

This plan will be informed by internal assessments, demographic analysis, and a thorough review of existing facilities. The resulting six-phase plan will focus on community needs and improvements, serving as a roadmap for the district’s future strategic initiatives.

“We recognize that the success of this plan depends on the active participation of our community,” said Board President, Christina Codo, “We need residents to share their insights and ideas. The voices of our community will be crucial in shaping the future of our parks and recreational spaces.”

The community engagement process began at one of Winnetka Park District’s largest events, Fall Fest, on September 28. Berry Dunn will also host an Open House on October 28 at the Winnetka Community House, located at 620 Lincoln Avenue, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The open house is for all Winnetka residents to attend which will  provide an opportunity to learn more about the planning process and share ideas. A survey invitation will be mailed to a randomly selected sample of residences with hopes of high participation.

Residents are also invited to contribute their thoughts via the engagement site. The Winnetka Park District looks forward to collaborating with the community to enhance the development, management, and improvement of the parks and recreational spaces.
