The Winnetka Park District is excited to announce the submission of a Special Use Permit application to the Village of Winnetka’s Zoning Board of Appeals for the enhancement project at Elder Lane Park + Beach. This submission, made on Monday, September 16, 2024, represents a key step in the Park District’s ongoing commitment to providing convenient lakefront access while preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of Lake Michigan’s ecosystems.
The Elder Beach Enhancement Project reflects the evolving needs of our community, which increasingly values open spaces, health, and well-being. The project aligns with the Winnetka Park District’s Lakefront Master Plan Waterfront 2030 and the Village of Winnetka’s Comprehensive Plan, focusing on environmental stewardship and community inclusivity.
Key elements of the proposed enhancements include:
An all-access swimming beach
An accessible boardwalk, beach, and beach house (existing)
A new access staircase and low-level safety lighting
Bluff restoration with invasive species removal and native plantings to improve views of Lake Michigan
The removal of the pier and outfall relocation
Relocated stormwater outfall from existing pier to new stone groin structure (northern most beach)
Shannon Nazzal, Executive Director of the Winnetka Park District, commented, “We responded to public input and with the mission of Elder Beach and bluff improvements, which is to provide a balance of quality recreation and leisure opportunities while safeguarding assets and natural resources for present and future generations.”
Christina Codo, President of the Board of Commissioners at the Winnetka Park District, added, “The Elder Beach Enhancement Project represents a collaborative effort to enhance the quality of life for Winnetka residents and visitors. By preserving and enhancing this iconic community space, Winnetka Park District remains committed to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community environment.”
