Temporary Fence Installation at Centennial Dog Beach

January 27, 2023 UPDATE:

All dogs must be leashed at Centennial Beach until further notice.

At its January 26, 2023 meeting, the Winnetka Park District Board of Commissioners determined that all dogs must be leashed at the Centennial Dog Beach until a temporary fence can be installed. This decision was made to comply with the Cook County Animal and Rabies Control Ordinance, and the Park District Risk Management Agency’s requirements for Dog Access to Park and Recreation Areas Guide.

The dog leash requirement at Centennial Beach will continue until a temporary fence can be installed. Park District Staff engaged the Village of Winnetka, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and the Army Corps of Engineers to secure the permits required to install the fence, which could be installed adjacent to the north and south boundaries of Centennial public beach.  A permanent fence solution will be included in future Centennial Beach construction plans.

A temporary dog fence is to be installed on Centennial Beach.

Park District staff determined it is in the best interest of the agency to secure the dog beach now and, in so doing, be compliant with the Cook County Animal and Rabies Control Ordinance and the requirements of the Park District Risk Management Agency’s Dog Access to Park and Recreation Areas Guide.

Staff created a temporary fence plan to address the above.  The temporary dog fence will run adjacent to the north and south boundaries of Centennial public beach.  A permanent fence solution will be included in future Centennial Beach construction plans.

To accommodate public access along the lakefront, gates will be installed at the north and south border of the fencing to allow passage through the dog beach.

The temporary fence is expected to be fully installed as soon as possible, subject to weather and product availability. Use of Centennial Dog Beach may continue as normal during the installation. For your safety, please be aware of equipment and workers on site.
