Outdoor Ice Rinks

Winter officially arrives in Winnetka when the outdoor ice rinks are up and running. Whether it’s children learning to skate for the first time with their parents, pick up hockey games with friends, or grandparents watching their grandchildren skating and reminiscing about their own childhood, our outdoor ice rinks in Winnetka are a rite of passage for generations of residents. Come on out to our outdoor ice rinks and continue the tradition!

Gullen’s Pond

Gullen’s Pond is located outside the Winnetka Ice Arena at 490 Hibbard Road. This rink was designed to give residents an outdoor ice skating option throughout the winter. The rink is open daily for unstructured ice skating, pick-up hockey and broomball. Skate rentals are available for $6 at the ice arena front desk.

Rink Status Update

Due to the delay of the normal outdoor ice rink season, the Winnetka Park District has developed a status plan and timeline for setting up Gullen’s Pond. It is our intention to make every attempt to get the rink up and operational for the 2018/19 season.

This year’s delay (the rink typically opens the first week of December) has been due to the small missed window of weather-related opportunity for delivering and preparing the necessary materials to assemble and set up the outdoor rink, followed by the unique rain and ice storm over the Thanksgiving holiday.

The updated plan and timeline for establishing the most functional outdoor rink possible is below. Please note, this timeline is dependent on the weather. If conditions are not optimal, the timeline may be delayed.

Week of December 10

  • Delivery, assembly and set-up of outdoor rink materials
  • Attempt to set up refrigerated coils, which establish refrigerated rink conditions (typically more conducive in warmer weather conditions)
  • Set up boards

Week of December 17

  • Flooding of rink and establishment of initial ice

Opening scheduled for on or around December 23

The fluctuating seasonal weather conditions, along with the current natural-base outdoor rink foundation continues to create a series of unique annual challenges. It requires a significant commitment of staff and material resources, and modifications in order to provide the most useable outdoor ice conditions as possible.

We apologize for the late start to the outdoor ice season, but are fully committed to make every attempt to provide a functional, safe and enjoyable outdoor skating season as the weather conditions enable us to provide.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. We look forward to seeing you enjoy Gullen’s Pond this season.
