Beginning May 1, 2026, Winnetka Park District will launch a new Park Ranger program aimed at enhancing safety, improving visitor experience, and promoting responsible use of parks, facilities, and lakefront areas.
Park Rangers will provide regular patrols across park district properties, serving as a visible and approachable resource for the community. Their role focuses on education, engagement, and proactive support to help ensure parks remain safe, clean, and welcoming for everyone.
“Park Rangers will play an important role in connecting with our community while helping protect and care for our shared spaces,” said Shannon Nazzal, Executive Director. “When you see them in our parks, beaches and facilities, be sure to say hello and welcome them – they are here to be a positive park experience for all users.”
What to Expect from Park Rangers
Park Rangers will be actively present throughout parks, facilities, athletic fields, and lakefront areas. Their responsibilities include:
- Patrolling Park District properties to monitor safety and encourage compliance with park rules and ordinances.
- Providing courteous guidance and answering questions about park use, policies, and amenities.
- Observing Park activities and helping ensure events and gatherings follow established guidelines.
- Documenting daily activities, incidents, and observations to support park operations
- Reporting maintenance needs, safety hazards, vandalism, or suspicious activity
- Assisting with park and facility readiness, including setup and general upkeep
- Supporting rentals, programs, and special events.
- Providing basic first aid and coordinating with emergency services when necessary.
Education First
Park Rangers are not law enforcement officers. Their approach emphasizes education, communication, and voluntary compliance with park rules. In situations that require enforcement, Rangers will coordinate with local law enforcement or supervisors to ensure appropriate action is taken.
A Visible Resource for the Community
Park Rangers will work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, to provide coverage during peak park usage times. Community members are encouraged to approach Rangers with questions, concerns, or for assistance – they are here to help our entire community have a positive experience throughout the park district.
