Jr. Sailing 2010
The Winnetka Park District invites students entering grades 5-8 to learn to sail on the waters of
Lake Michigan this summer. Safety and fun are the emphasis as you learn to sail, a pastime you can
enjoy for a lifetime! With Lake Michigan as our neighbor, it is a natural fit to learn to sail and take
full advantage of the beautiful lakefront. All classes will be held at Lloyd beach, located at Lloyd
Place and Sheridan Road in Winnetka.
Qualified instructors will teach students on Sunfish boats. In addition, students will be exposed to
kayaking on the District’s two-person kayaks. The Winnetka Park District offers both beginner and
intermediate sailing classes for students entering grades 5-8 in the fall of 2010. There is nothing
like the feeling of coasting through the water on a boat that you are in control of. Experience the
freedom and fun of sailing right here in Winnetka!
All students must provide their own Type III, Coast Guard approved life jacket. A parent’s manual
will be sent to participants prior to the start of class.
Beginning sailors will learn how to sail a Sunfish boat and the many skills involved including:
wind, weather, rigging and de-rigging a boat, righting a boat, and many others.
Intermediate sailors will focus on more advanced techniques as well as beginning racing
strategies. Pre-requisites: One year in the Winnetka Park District sailing program and the ability to
sail a sunfish unassisted.

Lessons
The Winnetka Park District is offering
private sailing lessons for individuals who
want to brush up on sailing skills or learn
new skills. Skilled and experienced Sailing
Instructors will teach lessons on Sunfish
boats. Lessons are available for novice
through advanced sailors.
Private lessons may be scheduled through
the head sailing instructor and will be
offered as boat availability allows.
Lessons must be completed by
August 6, 2010.
