The Winnetka Park District is planning controlled burns at Bell Woods Park and Crow Island Woods Park on Tuesday, March 30 (alternate date March 31). Controlled burning simulates the natural fires that would have moved through this area prior to European settlement. Fire is Mother Nature’s way of weeding and fertilizing natural areas.
Once again, Pizzo and Associates has been hired to conduct the controlled burn. Winnetka Park District has been in constant communication with the fire department and they are aware of the planned burn. The crews who will conduct the burn are highly trained fire control specialists familiar with the fuel types present. Pizzo and Associates is the same firm that conducted the successful burn in the spring, 2009. There will be refuge areas that will not be burned for the local wildlife.
The entire burn process will last approximately 8 hours. The only inconvenience to you will be a small amount of smoke that may drift through the neighborhood.
If you have any questions please contact Robert Smith at (847) 501-2052 or (847) 770-0809. Our goal is to conduct a safe and effective burn that is designed to resurrect the natural plant life in each park.
