4/26/2014

10am - 12pm at Crow Island Woods

Come celebrate and learn about the rich Native American heritage that can be found in Winnetka as we plant saplings to create our own Tribal Council Circle. Council Circles were highly respected areas used for ceremonies and discussing Tribal issues. Nationally renowned author, Dennis Downes, and Andrew Johnson, Executive director of the American Indian Center, Inc. will be in attendance to give a brief lecture on the circle, Indian marker trees, and history of Native Americans in the area. Signed copies of his book, Native American Trail Marker Trees: Marking Paths Through The Wilderness, will be available for purchase. The Winnetka Historical Society will also be providing guided tours of the Schmidt-Burnham log house. In addition, we will also be providing 100 free native hardwood tree sapling whips that can be planted in the nearby woodlands or taken home.

Tribal Council Circle is supported in part by our community partners Nels Johnsnon Tree Experts and Winnetka Current.

And let’s face it, the more entries there are, the more festive the parade! So please participate! You don’t need talent (although it’s a plus if you have some), just enthusiasm. Entries may be as simple or sophisticated as you wish. You could decorate a bike, wagon or lawn tractor; build a stunning fl oat; dress in costume; play an instrument; march with the Girl Scouts... Be inspired! If you can’t resist this chance to show your patriotic spirit, please complete and return an entry form by June 23.
