Honor Those Who Have Served!

Korean War Veteran Denis J. Healy Honored Speaker At Winnetka Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony
Join in Winnetka’s 86th annual Memorial Day celebration! The parade kicks off at 10:00 am on Monday, May 27 from the corner of Glendale and Elm Streets and heads east to the Village Green. A ceremony immediately follows on the Village Green. In case of inclement weather an indoor ceremony will be held at Skokie School, 520 Glendale Avenue, at 10:00 a.m. This year’s guest speaker is Korean War Veteran Denis J. Healy.

As a visionary business and civic leader, Denis J. Healy, Chairman, Korean War National Museum clearly demonstrates the profound impact an individual can have on the community. His business acumen, civic leadership, and philanthropic spirit have earned him the respect of his peers in a city that has long been enriched by his commitment.

Holder of eight U.S. patents, Denis Healy earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the City College of New York (CCNY) and worked in Research and Development of Colgate Palmolive and the Mennen Company, as well as the Barr Company, before joining Turtle Wax, Inc. in 1971.

While attending CCNY, Mr. Healy entered the US Army where he proudly served in the Korean War as an infantryman attached to the 728th Military Police Battalion in Seoul, Korea. He is currently serving as Chairman of the Korean War National Museum Board of Directors, with plans to relocate the center from Springfield to New York. It is Mr. Healy’s vision to include the South Korean people in the planning and development and dedicate a part of the facility to the history and culture of Korea.

Denis, along with his wife, Sondra are Co-Chairmen of Turtle Wax Inc., a Chicago-based car-care company. Turtle Wax is the world’s largest manufacturer of car-care products. The Chicago-based company controls over 60 percent of the U.S. car wax market and sells its products in Europe, the Pacific Basin, and Central and South America. It also markets chemicals for commercial car washes, owns and operates the largest chain of full-service car washes in the Chicago market, and manufactures shoe polishes and household cleaners. On many occasions Mr. Healy has offered free washes to the men and women serving in the Armed Forces and veterans.

Denis has always managed to provide leadership and generous support to many civic and community organizations. Despite the demanding schedule of his corporate and family commitments, he continues to pledge significant time and support to Chicago Symphony Association, Catholic Charities and Junior Achievement of Chicago. Mr. Healy is on the board of the USO of Illinois, and has served as Chairman of the Board. Denis’ vision helped locate the USO to Navy Pier where thousands of service men and women visit as their home-away-from-home while in Chicago.

As a devoted civic leader and philanthropist, he has demonstrated unwavering commitment to education through his involvement as a trustee of Northwestern University, The University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, DePaul University, Midtown Education Foundation and After School Matters. Mr. Healy is the Vice President of the 100 Club of Chicago, supporting the families of fallen Police Officers, Law Enforcement Officers and Firefights of Cook County. He served for many years on Mercy Hospital and Evanston Northwestern Hospital boards. Denis also Chaired “Options for People,” a non-profit dedicated to bringing the long-term unemployed to the workforce.

As committed as Denis is to the community, he is equally committed to his family. He and Sondra have recently celebrated their 41st anniversary and have three children and eleven grandchildren.

Fourth of July Celebration

Fourth of July Parade • 10 am

Watch and support local organizations and your fellow neighbors as they march in Winnetka’s Annual Fourth of July Parade along with the Jesse White Tumblers, National Champion Jazz Steppers, Orchestras, Pipe Bands, Dixieland Bands, Uncle Sam on stilts and so much more!

The parade steps off from the intersection of Elm Street and Glendale Avenue and heads east through town all the way to the Village Green. Family, friends and anyone in between are welcome to be a part of this patriotic event.

Special thanks to community partners Edwards Florist, John Q. Cook, MD and Winnetka Talk.

Parade Participation
Our annual July 4th parade is always a wonderful event that brings us all together as friends, neighbors and citizens. We like to involve as many people as possible in our parade, because it’s always fun to see our citizenry getting into the spirit and doing something out of the ordinary. And let’s face it, the more entries there are, the more festive the parade!

So please participate! You don’t need talent (although it’s a plus if you have some), just enthusiasm. Entries may be as simple or sophisticated as you wish. You could decorate a bike, wagon or lawn tractor; build a stunning float; dress in costume; play an instrument; march with the Girl Scouts... Be inspired!

If you can’t resist this chance to show your patriotic spirit, please complete and return an entry form by June 23. You may also call us (847) 501-2040 to ask how you can become a part of this marvelous tradition.

The parade entry form is available at the Winnetka Park District Administrative Office, 540 Hibbard Road or online at www.winpark.org.

Events on the Green • 11 am

After the parade, join us at the Village Green for the traditional flag-raising ceremony, children’s flag parade and family races . . . let the bragging rights begin.

Fourthfest • 6 pm

Come celebrate our nation’s birthday at the Winnetka Park District’s annual Fourthfest at Duke Childs Field. Bring dinner or purchase food while you enjoy music, food and children’s activities prior to the most spectacular FIREWORKS on the North Shore. A multitude of attractions and entertainment will be there including face-painters, balloonists, moon walks, a giant slide and so much more.

Crow Island
7-8:30 pm at Hubbard Woods Park

Crow Island’s name came from the fact that the band met over two years ago, on Cherry Street in Andy Ratts’ ‘lower level’ to jam on Sunday evenings.  The chemistry was uncanny, the music sounded good from the start, and they began pursuing putting together music that they liked, and that sounds great.  After band members did some research on the area, they discovered that the actual land mass, Crow Island, was only a few hundred yards away from their actual meeting ‘jam” location. Visit their website at www.crowislandmusic.net.  Band members are: Dan Bulfin, Jan Hartwell, Bob Cody, Michael Graham, Andy Rats and Jim and Jessica Hurter.
